In January, I challenged myself to stop buying bread from the grocery store and instead make it myself. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I am happy to report that I didn’t buy a single loaf of bread in January.
When I decided to do this, I did it for a couple reasons. I was tired of buying bread with ingredients I didn’t like. Though we normally buy loaves without things like High Fructose Corn Syrup, it was hard to avoid other undesirable ingredients and preservatives. Saving money was another benefit of making my own bread. Even with organic ingredients, it is cheaper to make it yourself.
Nutrition and frugality aside, the best reason I had for making my own bread was the taste! There just isn’t a bagged grocery store bread out there that can beat the taste of freshly baked bread straight from your oven.
After successfully going an entire month of making my own bread, I decided I didn’t want to stop! It doesn’t take that much active time, it saves money, and it tastes fantastic. So, I am going to challenge myself to do it again this month, and I want to challenge you to do the same!
Basic sandwich bread only takes 6 ingredients, and you probably already have them at home. Yeast, flour, sugar, salt, butter and water. The best thing about bread is, it can be altered to suit your needs. There are gluten free versions, sugar free, whole wheat, sour dough – whatever tickles your fancy. So grab your favorite recipe, check to make sure you’ve got the ingredients on hand, and join me in my February Fresh Baked Bread Challenge!
